Water Contamination in Hydraulic Oil: Why Small Amounts Matter

Water can accelerate corrosion, oxidation, additive degradation and mechanical wear in hydraulic systems.

The industrial issue

Water can enter through condensation, breathers, cooler leaks or poor storage. In hydraulic systems this can reduce lubricant film quality, accelerate oxidation, promote rust and create particles that circulate through pumps, valves and seals.

Why maintenance matters

A hydraulic system can look normal while water content is already damaging reliability. Good storage, breathers, water separation capability, filtration and oil-condition monitoring reduce the chance that a small contamination problem becomes a pump, valve or seal failure.

Procurement implication

Do not select hydraulic oil only by ISO VG number. Confirm the equipment requirement, water-separation performance, anti-wear chemistry and cleanliness expectations before purchase.
