Over-Greasing Bearings: Why More Grease Can Mean More Heat

Excess grease can cause churning, temperature rise and seal problems—especially at higher speed.

The common mistake

When a bearing runs hot, adding more grease may feel like the safe response. In reality, excessive grease can increase churning and operating temperature.

Why it becomes damaging

Higher temperature accelerates grease oxidation and can damage seals, while excessive fill can prevent the grease from distributing correctly.

Better practice

Use the correct grease quantity and relubrication interval for bearing size, speed, housing and operating condition. Investigate the root cause of a hot bearing before adding grease.
