Used Oil Analysis: Finding Soot, Wear Metals and Oil Degradation Before Failure

Used-oil trends can reveal abnormal contamination, wear metals and oil-condition changes before visible engine symptoms appear.

Why analysis matters

Oil carries information from the engine. Abnormal soot, dirt, coolant markers or wear metals can signal air-intake, cooling or mechanical problems.

Trend, not one number

A single sample has limited value. Consistent sampling at the same point and interval creates trends that help maintenance teams distinguish normal change from an emerging problem.

Drain interval decisions

Oil analysis can support drain-interval optimisation, but it should be combined with OEM guidance, operating severity and the correct oil specification.
