High Temperature and Compressor Oil: How Oxidation Leads to Sludge and Deposits

Heat accelerates oxidation, which can shorten oil life and create acids, varnish and sludge.

Why compressor oil runs hard

Compressor oil must lubricate, cool, seal and help transport contaminants. High discharge temperature increases oxidation rate and can create deposits that restrict filters or oil passages.

Operating environment matters

Humidity and dust add further stress. A drain interval suitable for a mild environment may be too long in hot, humid or dusty service.

Maintenance action

Use OEM-approved or technically suitable lubricant, monitor operating temperature and follow condition/interval guidance. Investigate overheating instead of treating repeated oil degradation as normal.
